The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well - (GB, US) - 1996

Before winning the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival for his 2015 Right Now, Wrong Then, critically acclaimed director Hong Sang-soo had already cemented his reputation as a key figure of the Korean new wave with his 1996 feature debut The Day a Pig Fell into the Well.

An ensemble piece paying homage to French new wave director Eric Rohmer, The Day a Pig Fell into a Well tells four interconnected stories: an impoverished writer anxious about his new manuscript, the married woman with whom he's having an affair, her germaphobe husband's career struggles, and a lonely ticket-seller's wistful love-life. These four tales coalesce into a moving character study of alienation and existential longing.

Featuring the debut performance of superstar actor Song Kang-ho (Parasite, The Foul King) The Day a Pig Fell into a Well was lauded at the Korean Blue Dragon awards and the Korean Film Critics Association awards, swiftly becoming a classic of Korean cinema.
