Arrow Video

Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) is a businessman with great ambitions. Spotting the development potential of London's derelict Docklands area years before the Thatcher government, he tries to broker a deal with his American counterpart (Eddie Constantine) that will make them both millions. But who is killing Harold's other associates and blowing up his businesses - and why?

Universally regarded as one of the greatest gangster films ever made, The Long Good Friday rocketed Hoskins to international stardom. He's given sterling support from Helen Mirren (as his upper-crust girlfriend), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Derek Thompson (Casualty), and there's even an early appearance from future James Bond Pierce Brosnan.

The Definitive Release?

Devoured this release from Arrow as soon as it arrived. Very well presented with a choice of artwork (a lovely touch for us nerds - Hannah Gillingham's new artwork is a very worthy alternate choice.) Anyway, ignore this piffle - I've come on here to say the 4k transfer is superb; it loses none of the grit of the original, and it manages to correct some colour/brightness issues from past versions (I believe Phil Meheux may have had a hand in it?). The soundtrack is also flawlessly treated, with the sympathetically updated Dolby Atmos version sitting nicely alongside the original, uncompressed mono. Nice set of extra features - a treasure trove compared to the Criterion DVD release (excellent documentary, more contemporary interviews and a BFI Q&A from 2000). Proud to have this in my collection - struggling to think of ways this could be improved, to be honest. This - to my mind - is the definitive edition of one of Britain's greatest films.
