Arrow Video

Unreleased for nearly twenty years, The Birthday has achieved near-mythic status among cult film enthusiasts. Shot on a single, meticulously designed location, Eugenio Mira’s deliriously offbeat dark comedy offers a career-best turn from Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), playing wildly against type.

Painfully awkward Norman Forrester (Feldman) chooses the opulent birthday party of his girlfriend Alison’s (Erica Prior) wealthy father (Jack Taylor, Conan the Barbarian) as the perfect moment to propose. But between bizarre encounters with guests and unnervingly polite hotel staff, Norman stumbles into a nightmarish occult conspiracy that threatens not just his relationship but the fate of the world itself.

Rediscovered at last, The Birthday blends screwball comedy, cosmic horror and feverish style into an unforgettable cinematic experience. Restored from the original negative, Arrow Video is proud to present this one-of-a-kind descent into madness in the release it’s always deserved.

A present I've long been waiting for!

I can't remember how long ago I first emailed Arrow suggesting they release this, and, I'll be honest, I think it's got more to do with Jordan Peele screening the film than me, but still, it's a real treat to have this on 4K (a huge upgrade from my pixelated German import DVD). A unique and stylish film that does wonders with its small budget and limited setting, with some exceptional choreography and interplay between the actors and the camera. Genuinely, a career-best performance from Feldman, and suggests an actor never quite given the opportunity to play too far out of his comfort zone, but he relishes the chance here and is Norman is a perfectly cartoonish foil for the wild shenanigans that befall him. The extras are fun, Eugenio Mira is clearly so happy that this film's finally seeing the light of day in his interview, and the 2024 Q&A with Feldman is pretty weird as Feldman conducts it "in character" as Norman from the film!?! Definitely a bizarre and acquired taste of a film, but it's truly special that Arrow are giving this film the lease of life it deserves (if it had recevied a proper release 20 years ago it'd definitely be a beloved cult curio by now), and it's really wonderful to see labels like this giving "nearly lost" media a chance to flourish. If you're a fan of Feldman, of Richard Kelly's films, of movie like The Dark Backwards, and other askew comedies with horror elements, then I highly recommend this disc!
