Named after the apocryphal exclamation of Soviet security chief Lavrentiy Beria as he rushed to Stalin's deathbed, this blackly funny, deliriously immersive satire distils the anticipation and anxiety in the Moscow air, as the Soviet despot lay dying.
Late winter 1953. The lives of nearly half the planet are in Stalin's hands. A military surgeon, General Yuri Georgievich Klensky (Yuri Tsurilo), finds himself a target of the ""Doctors' Plot"": the anti-Semitic conspiracy accusing Jewish doctors in Moscow of planning to assassinate the Soviet elite. Pursued, abused, and marked for the gulags, Yuri is chased and dragged through a Stalinist Soviet nightmare. His desperate, jolting journey encapsulates the madness of the era.
Directed by Aleksei German (Hard to Be a God), Khrustalyov, My Car! proved wildly provocative when it was screened at the 1998 Cannes film festival, despite being championed as the best film of the festival by the president of the Cannes jury that year, Martin Scorsese. A one-of-a-kind collision of nightmare and realism, German's film is presented here with a wealth of illuminating extras.

Quite The Experience
Those who have seen Hard To Be A God will know what to expect from this amazing movie. Visually brilliant, long wide angle tracking shots in which you feel that every corner of the frame is filled with people coming and going. Nothing makes completely sense, it gets quite intense at times, but in the end Gelman gets there. Truly unique. Gorgeous transfer.

Great
Khrustalyov, my car! is the work of a fine craftsman and probably one of the last cinema's great réalisateurs, Aleksei German. The film itself is real tour de force: fast paced and carrying you through an spiral of madness, the film is very unlikely to fully assimilated in the first view, but its level of details and its perfectionist cinema craft will prove it is a worthwhile experience to be revisited as many times as possible. The Arrow edition is absolutely a must have, the presentation and its extras are just great, except, I must say, for the testimony of a Scholar in the so called "doctor's plot", a campaign in the Soviet Union promoted against Jewish doctors and role played by Stalin in it. It is so anti-communist that even liberals will find it find it hard to not label it as absolutely biased and a piece of propaganda.
