'Marlowe' is a late sixties resetting of Raymond Chandler's LA Private Detective. Portrayed with typical cynical detachment and dry wit by the great (and to me underrated) James Garner, this incarnation of Marlowe inhabits (somewhat uneasily) the era of the Hippy, navigating a path that invariably sees him getting clobbered, drugged, and in one memorable scene, having his shabby office demolished by none other than Bruce Lee. Based on Chandler's novel 'Little Sister', 'Marlowe ' is a pacy, taut and well-acted tale that is peopled with a selection of ripe characters, including TV's 'Uncle Fester', Jackie Coogan, in a terrible wig, Carroll 'Archie Bunker' O'Connor as a perpetually angry cop, and the great Rita Moreno, who provides one of the movie's many highlights with a truly sexy striptease at the film's denouement. The Blu Ray transfer is vibrant and captures the garish LA of the late sixties beautifully, and Sterling Silliphant's script crackles. James Garner is always great value, and I recommend this Blu Ray emphatically!
