Dark, foggy, bleak tones and textures wrapped into possibly one of the most heart-pounding thrillers I've ever seen. But it's also about the complexities of human nature, confronting the tragedies and infinite consequences of war, and finding the thin lines between moral corruption and spiritual growth. Only a Czech movie from 1966 would be crazy enough to tackle WWII in such a highly stylized visual and sonic fashion while not only utterly waxing philosophical but also crawling under your skin with pure, bold thrills. The camerawork, editing, score, and performances all deserve rave reviews, along with the genuinely creative approach and depth of storytelling. From start to finish, Coach to Vienna plays out like a nightmare brought to life in a landscape of death and defeat as you follow a totally valid revenge plot, but by the end this isn't afraid to put aside the genre spectacle and simply make you think about the world and other people and the nature of life. Again, just really incredible stuff.
