'Death Smiles on a Murderer’ (1973) is a gruesomely gorgeous, Gothic-tinged, period-set Giallo/Horror hybrid by one of my favourite Italian genre film artists, the estimable cinematographer, and prolific producer/director Joe D’Amato aka Aristide Massaccesi. For me, this dreamlike, weirdly erotic, deliciously doomy diorama of desperately diabolical love is one of his most visually resplendent works, and is certainly not to be missed by eager fans of maestro D’Amato’s salaciously sinful cinema, and would most certainly make a wonderfully vivid primer for any not altogether familiar with his greatly undervalued genre cinema. I am far from objective about this necrotic nightmare, since I remain a HUGE, HUGE fan of the delightfully degenerated, nastily necromantic blood-spiller 'Death Smiles on a Murderer', and I am quite sure it will bring out your super-creepy cat scratch Klaus Kinski fever! You say tomato, I say D'Amato, baby! Both the visual resolution of the Arrow Video Blu-ray, and sublime content quality of the extra features are no less immaculate!
