Rightly revered gangster thriller in the classic noir tradition, but one which refreshingly differentiates itself from an American approach of the genre. For example it's more forward attitude to sex, and the famous silent robbery set-pice. Full of slow burning tension as the suspense builds, as does the robbers' [and director Dassin's] rigorous attention to detail.
