Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) is a businessman with great ambitions. Spotting the development potential of London's derelict Docklands area years before the Thatcher government, he tries to broker a deal with his American counterpart (Eddie Constantine) that will make them both millions. But who is killing Harold's other associates and blowing up his businesses - and why?
Universally regarded as one of the greatest gangster films ever made, The Long Good Friday rocketed Hoskins to international stardom. He's given sterling support from Helen Mirren (as his upper-crust girlfriend), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Derek Thompson (Casualty), and there's even an early appearance from future James Bond Pierce Brosnan.

Bob Hoskins plays an English mobster who believes in the EU. The storyline is rather typical. You could argue his downfall is not caused by his own ambition. In the end it is his arrogance that gets him. The whole cast is great, including Hellen Mirren with something that you might call sex appeal and a baby-faced Pierce Brosnan in speedos. Bob Hoskins is absolutely phe-no-me-nal. It's been a long time ago that I enjoyed cursing, swearing and name-calling that much. The UHD looks crisps and shiny. Great packaging. Great extras.

Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren are on FIRE in this classic. This was a blind buy for me, but Hoskins is showing the world what acting is (he is absolutely phenomenal), while Helen Mirren redefine the gangster's girl, showing intelligence, wit and cunning, just in her acting. She 's SO good. Have you not seen this yet but you really like strong acting performances - give it a go. Beautiful in 4K. I don't know if this is better that the Criterion release, but personally, I just think Arrow goes that extra mile for a film. So I choose their release.
