Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) share a ride to New York City. Initially, Harry's bravado and Sally's innocence clash, particularly over the question "can men and women be friends?" Despite this, over many years of chance encounters, a deep friendship develops between the two. As their connection blossoms, a sudden lapse of judgment forces both Harry and Sally to answer once and for all, can men and women truly just be friends?
