This is one of Tsukamotos best later films. While, in my opinion all his films since he started shooting in digital, suffer from a cheap feel if you consider only the images (this might be a matter of personal taste) the story makes up for it almost every time. “Fires On The Plain“ is the most consequent anti-war film I have seen to date. It depicts perfectly the madness triggered by war and leading in this case to cannibalism. All the characters fulfil their narrative purpose perfectly, although in a stage-play kind of way, but this is what Tsukamoto movies are, a perfect blend of experimental stage and experimental movie making.
