Arrow Films

The Future is History.

Following the commercial and critical success of The Fisher King, Terry Gilliam next feature would turn to science fiction and a screenplay by Janet and David Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven) inspired by Chris Marker's classic short film La Jetée.

In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world's population and forcing survivors underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in their search for a cure.

Featuring an Oscar-nominated turn by Brad Pitt (Fight Club) as mental patient Jeffrey Goines, Twelve Monkeys would become Gilliam's most successful film and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi classic. Arrow Films are proud to present the film in a stunning new restoration.

Impressive 4K transfer with interesting special features

The 4K version of 12 Monkeys is an impressive presentation of the film, with interesting special features, such as the feature length making of documentary The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys, from the same team that also made Lost in La Mancha.

Amazing 4k in your face

12 Monkeys has always been a special film for me — but what Arrow achieved with this 4K remaster truly blew me away. The dark, chaotic world feels even more tangible, more oppressive. I’ve seen the film many times, but this version made me feel like I was right in the middle of it for the first time. Small details, glances, the way scenes are framed — everything hits harder. Well done, guys!

Now that it's fixed, it's great!

I heard there were issues with the film repeating a scene so I waited for Arrow to fix it before picking it up. It wasn't really my favourite when I first saw it in '99 but this film grew on me. Great transfer as well! Only issue I had was that my case was cracked on the side when I got it with a chunk of plastic missing. This is the only time this has happened.

Superior transfer

I had the Arrow blu-ray edition of this movie but this new 4k UHD is the better choice : it retains all the extra material and significantly improves the transfer of the movie itself. It really feels like the experience of watching a movie shot on film projected in optimal conditions.
