The film that established Terry Gilliam as more than just Monty Python's resident animator, this delightfully inventive children's fantasy is about young Kevin (Craig Warnock) who finds himself travelling through holes in the space-time continuum in the company of half a dozen fractious dwarfs.
Along the way, he encounters Agamemnon (Sean Connery), Robin Hood (John Cleese), Napoleon (Ian Holm) and winds up as a passenger on the Titanic, although not necessarily in that order. But is this just random entertainment laid on for history fan Kevin's benefit, or part of a wider struggle between the forces of good (Ralph Richardson) and evil (David Warner)?
At the time, this was a rare example of a small-budget British film successfully taking on American blockbusters. Now, it's a much-loved fantasy classic bursting with inspired images and ideas: Gilliam and co-writer Michael Palin (who also appears) are clearly enjoying themselves as much as their audience.

My favourite Gilliam
My favourite Terry Gilliam film, I find it as much fun today as I did when I first saw it on video back in the Eighties. It being a Gilliam film it looks great: the composition of shots, the set design, the costumes, they all contribute to the feeling of magic and wonder that has eluded so many of the films of the CGI age. The knight in shining armour bursting of the wardrobe, the duel between Agamemnon and the minotaur in ancient Greece, the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness being revealed behind a shattered skyline... fantastic visuals soaked in magic. And that cast; Craig Warnock is good as the child protagonist Kevin, and David Rappaport suitably charismatic as the leader of the diminutive time-travelling miscreants, but the film has a series of cameos to die for: Ian Holm as Napoleon, John Cleese as Robin Hood, Michael Plain as a lovesick loser (twice!), Sean Connery as Greek warrior-king Agamemnon, and Sir Ralph Richardson as the Supreme Being. But the stand-out amongst that embarrassment of riches is David Warner as Evil. He just steals the show every time he's on screen, he's just so good. Arrow's Blu-ray is packed with interviews with various members of cast and crew. The picture is good, it's not been digitally smoothed as far as I can see, with noticeable grain present, particularly in the effects shots. I don't think it's ever going to look better on a standard Blu-ray. As you expect from Arrow, there is a colour booklet about the film included, plus a reversable Blu-ray sleeve. This is a great package for a magical movie.
