Now That's What I Call Cinema! Vol. 701

A little over two years ago, I stumbled upon Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion and, soon after viewing it, sought to watch the rest of the tetralogy. Needless to say, I somewhat fell in love with these films: with their highly stylized direction, lighting, staging; and, of course, an iconic and mesmerizing lead performance from Meiko Kaji. Really, these films show that the distance between exploitation and art-house cinema is not so great after all, and could often be one and the same. 701's Grudge Song, while enjoyable, feels to me like an unnecessary addition to an otherwise concluded trilogy, but that's as negative as I can get towards these films. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful box set from Arrow and an absolute must for anyone interested in exploitation cinema. Glad to have picked it up after all this time.

A triumph of female led cinema.

Overview: Featuring the beautiful Meiko Kaji in her debut, and going on to make her a star! The Female Prisoner Scorpion series is a true triumph of female led action movies. Paving the way for those such as Kill Bill and Lara Croft. This collection contains all 4 movies in the series, which feature graphic violence but ultimately demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit in a way seldom seen in main stream cinema. Presentation: The collection features new 2K restorations of all 4 movies which include the original mono sound files and a very clean image to really demonstrate the photography and beauty of these films. The new artwork for each film looks incredible, but as always the original artwork is available on the reverse of the covers. Special Features: Each disc comes with an appreciation by some big names in the film world such as Gareth Evans (The Raid) and critic Kat Ellinger. As well as a whole host of featurettes to really flesh out the release. Verdict: This is a must own for fans of Japanese Cinema. Four films following the struggles of Nami Matushima as she fights against prison guards, police and fellow prisoners to survive. The films themselves are great, but the presentation in this Arrow Video release is truly unmatched.

ARTWORK!

Was drawn to this purely by the artwork.  Absolutely blew me away. Arrow does it again!
