Arrow Video

From screenwriter Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys) and director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) comes ass-kicking action thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Eight years ago, Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) washed up on a beach, pregnant, with no memory. Now she's a school teacher living an idyllic small town life with a daughter and boyfriend who love her. She's almost given up on ever finding out about the life she used to lead, until an accident awakens hidden memories and her past comes back with all guns blazing. With the help of low rent private eye Mitch Henessey (Samuel L. Jackson) Samantha must uncover who she was and why so many people want her dead before it kills them both.

With unforgettable action sequences and dialogue to die for, The Long Kiss Goodnight ranks among the very best of 90s action thrillers. Geena Davis is a revelation as the wholesome school teacher struggling to reconcile with her deadly alter ego Charly, while Samuel L. Jackson brings his quintessential charm to a role that so enamoured test audiences they refused to let him die. Strap yourselves in and hold on tight!

Underrated gem

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Shane Black can write great dialogue and this film is a quote machine. So many great lines. The film working rests on the shoulders of Geena Davis convincingly portraying two very different characters. And she pulls it off. She’s fantastic in this film and it’s a shame she didn’t do more action roles because she does a fantastic job here. Samuel L Jackson is fantastic as ever as the other part of the main double act.  The action is big and bold with some incredible set pieces including the climax at Niagara Falls. Renny Harlin does a good job with the direction, he isn’t a director who is going to win awards but he directs action extremely well. The fight scenes are over the top and big but when it comes down to the hand to hand combat there’s a decent attempt at keeping fight consistency. You don’t have Geena Davis getting punched in the head 15 times and just brushing herself off. There’s a real scrappy nature to her fighting style and a tactical approach that doesn’t once make you question whether she would actually be able to take on her opponents.

Were you always this stupid, or did you take lessons?

This limited edition features a reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork, an illustrated collector's booklet featuring some interesting essays, a patently hilarious "seasonal postcard" with Samuel L. Jackson's favorite expletive, and a "thin ice" sticker in the IYKYK category. Packaging features a slipcover. Once again Arrow is offering fans of a cult film (and cult director) a veritable collection of solid technical merits and really appealing supplements.

A classic!

This is an instant classic! Sam Jackson, Geena Davis, Renny Harlin all working on a Shane Black script - could you ask for more? I could only ask that someone complete the next movie “The Kiss After Lightning”

First time seeing this and Arrow did a great job. Excellent picture quality. Many bonus features still to view. The film itself was a lot of fun and the lead actors were great. Look forward to watching again with a commentary.
