Arrow Films

Exploding onto the screen in a kinetic flurry of hyper-stylised action, The Villainess is a stunning vengeance film that draws its inspiration from western classics including Nikita and Kill Bill...

Sook-hee (Kim Ok-bin, Thirst) is a trained assassin who takes revenge on the men who murdered her father in a breathtaking opening sequence. After losing consciousness she awakes at the National Intelligence Service who recruit her as an agent to undertake confidential missions. Initially refusing, Sook-hee soon realises it is her only method of escape, until she is assigned a new assignment that changes everything...

Deliriously indulging in the excesses of South Korean action, recalling Park Chan-wook s Oldboy, The Villainess is a visionary new take on the neo-noir genre and an incredible thrill ride not to be missed.

Entertaining Action Movie with an amazing Audio Commentary

"The Villainess" is a Korean action thriller from 2016. The story of a female assassin trying to live two lives is highly entertaining for the most part. Especially the first 10 minutes show an incredible action sequence that has hardly ever been seen before. In general, the action scenes are competently made, creative, and violent. However, during the second act, the story starts to drag a bit, as the movie becomes more of a dramatic love story. While sudden and unexpected genre shifts are one of the highlights in Korean cinema, this particular one is clumsy. It seems, the filmmakers wanted to make an action thriller and finally streched the story to reach the 2 hour mark. Yet, small set pieces during the second act keep the viewer interested until the brilliant finale in/on/around a bus. The movie is worth its price for the camera during the opening and ending alone. What this disc lacks in extra features, Arrow is usually know for, it more than makes up for with its audio commentary track. Fans of the Arrow Video Podcast will be delighted to hear (they probably already have though) that Dan Martin and Sam Ashurst are responsible for it. Instead of the usual episode, we get to listen to them talking action, Korean cinema, and, obviously, "The Villainess" for two hours. I'm usually not the biggest audio commentary guy, but their outside-inside perspective (outside of the production, but inside of the world of cinema) makes for another great two hours. In conclusion, I watched the movie twice, back to back, because I did not want to pause or stop the audio commentary. The film is a 3/5 for me, the commentary is a 5/5. Therefore, this disc is a good 4/5.
